Post subject: 8-Day Longcase - stops after 5 days
I have an early C19th 8-day clock by Amyoti & Bennet (makers in Norwich, UK, where I live) which has been in the family for generations. It moved house with us a year ago and ran perfectly for the first year.
It was taken apart for room decoration recently and despite setting it up again as before, secure, vertical, horizontal, in beat etc, it stops after about 5 days. The weight always appears to be in the same place when it stops, which leads me to think that it could be the weight catching on the pendulum, or door; on checking carefully, I don't believe this to be the fault.
Where else should I be looking? The weight cable winds neatly on its drum. There are no obvious snags near any wheel...
Your suggestions welcome!
Regards,
Dave

I would first check to make certain the pendulum is in beat. Perhaps, during the move, the pendulum shifted slightly out of beat (which would cause the clock to stop). Before checking the beat, make certain the case (in particular the movement) is level front to back and side to side.
