I have a family Ansonia School Clock that has stopped recently. It has otherwise kept perfect time since before 1900. I had it cleaned and lubricated about 10 years ago, prior to that it had only been serviced (according to the engravings on the movement) a few times.

I removed the face and looked to see if I could see any binding but saw nothing obvious to me. It will run for a few minutes, ticking and all, then it will just run down.

Any thoughts? I would like to try and fix it myself but at the same time I don't want to damage it.

sounds like it may need another cleaning and service. I would also look at the bushings in the plate to make sure there is not too much play between the gear shaft and plate, you will notice it by elongated holes.
