Banjo Clock movement works lying down but not upright

I am fixing an old banjo clock that has a Sessions Movement with a balance wheel. After servicing it, it works perfectly if setting on it's side but if upright it does not work.

I have never encountered a problem like this before. Does anyone have any ideas that i should try?

check the movement it may need to be cleaned and oiled. while you have it out of the case check the endplay in the balance wheel if it is excessive adjust it by turning the nut gently in to the right with a pair of small pliers. the endplay should not excede the amount of clearance you have between the pallets and the escape wheel. depending on the wear in the clock you may have to have a bit more clearance but not much more. eddie
