Post subject: Calendar hand on clock moving to quickly.
I have just purchased a Seth Thomas drop dial calendar clock. When I took delivery the calendar arm was not moving. Having spoken to the seller he took me through the process of getting it working. There is a lever that should be placed on a cog behind the calendar arm shaft, this had come away from the cog. I applied pressure to the lever so that it rests on the small cog behind the calendar arm shaft. This morning it was pointing to the 27th and when I came home this evening it had moved to the 5th. I have not put the minute hand back on the clock as I am waiting for a new washer for it. Could this be the cause of the problem? I cannot see how as I would have thought the movement is governed by the hour cog (which I am assuming the lever is now sitting on). The clock is approx 50 years old. Thanks for any responses.[/b]

I suggest you advance the minute hand slowly through each hour until the calendar hand moves. (it should move at midnight and should move only one date) If it moves more than that, remove the dial, replace the hands, and watch it move as you advance the hands. You should be able to see the pin that moves the calendar hand. It may be bent. If so, carefully straighten it and watch it again as you advance the hands. It is probably something very simple.

Could it moveing to fast as a result of the hour hand being to tight on the calendar spindle.

That is definately possible. It should be independant of other hand shafts. You should be able to move it easily by simply pushing it forward or backward.
