I have a new Howard Miller mantel clock with the triple chime movement. I fixed the double strike (ie the hammer hits the chime rod twice) by slightly bending the hammer arms back. However, by observing the hammers while the clock chimes, I've narrowed the problem down to only one hammer. I haven't been able to fixed this hammer (the one with the largest chime rod), but I've noticed that it only double strikes occasionally, as opposed to all the time. Today, this hammer barely has a hiccup, and the chiming and striking have no problems. Is this double strike common on brand new clocks? Perhaps their is a certain "wearing in" of the parts.
