I have a Colonial Mfg. hall clock from the '20's that started missing chimes years ago. My mom had a high-end repair guy work on it, but it still missed occasionally. After she died and it came to me, I could reset it, but over the past years the problem has gotten worse so it almost never chimes at all. The striking works fine. Oddly enough, when I manually move the minute hand forward, it chimes perfectly at the hour and quarter hour, but not when it runs itself. Any ideas?

If it is a mechanical movement (not operating off of AC power or batteries), I would recommend starting with a good oiling/cleaning from a qualified repair person. Along the way, that repair person should be able to tell if any bearings (etc) are worn and in need of replacement. In most cases, a thorough cleaning and oiling will usually remedy many problems. Being that you have had this serviced prior, it may actually be that some parts are worn and in need of replacement. Please keep checking back for other posts from our more experienced forum patrons.
