Post subject: chimes half hour and hour the same number of times need help
I have a Waltham 31 day wall clock that chimes the same number of times on the both the half hour and hour before it advances to the next hour. Most I've been able to do, is to change it from either 30 mins. before the hour or 30 mins after the hour(flipping the minute hand 6 hours), but it still chimes the same number of hours on both the 6 and 12 positions. In other words, say at 5:30 it chimes 6 times and then at 6 it chimes 6 times again. Can't get it to chime just once on the half hour. Most I can do it get it to chime 6 times on say 6 o'clock and then 6 times again a 6:30 or 6 times at 5:30 and 6 time at 6 o'clock.
Anyone have any suggestions on what to do? It's one of those clocks with the Korean movements with one spring for the chime and one for the time. I could sure use some help here or maybe an explanation of what is malfunctioning. I've watched the movement go through the chime process and essentially it does the hour chime twice for each hour before it advances to the next hour.

Thanks for replying clokfxr. I've never worked on this particular clock before, but I have fixed a few clocks over the years. Just curious as to wether it's miss-timing of one of the parts or perhaps a part needs to be replaced?

I've never seen a Walthem but as most chime clocks basically work the same it could be the lifting lever area that is the problem .
somehow it is being lifted too high on the half hour.
look for wear and too much play in the parts. on an old clock this is could cause a problem.

What I noticed when I removed the faceplate and advanced the minute hand to get it to chime, is tht a kind of hook or L shaped lever with notches (teeth) on it drops down a certain amount based on the number of chimes the clock is suppose to make at that time. As the chiming starts, a gear with a cog on it starts to spin and for each chime the gear make one revolution. The cog in the gear lift the lever one notch for each chime until it has lifted the lever a certain amount and the chiming ends. The problem is that the lever with the notches (teeth) drop the same amount on both the half hour and hour...so let's say I get for example 4 chimes at 4 o'clock and 4 chimes at 4:30...then 5 at 5 o'clock and 5 at 5:30. I haven't dug into it enough to see what should limit the lever to fall only enough for 1 chime on the half hour.
