Post subject: chimes out of synch
Hi All.
can anyone help. I have just bought an old wall clock (maker unknown) and the chimes are 8 minutes slow ie hourly chime at 8 past the hour and hslf hour chime at twenty too the hour. I have tried waiting for the chime and moving hands back to the houir then forward again to correct time but this has no effect Any Tips please

It depends on the age of your clock. If you remove the minute hand you will see that the hand shaft and minute hand is squared so that it fits on the shaft in only one of four positions. (on some clocks only one of two positions).
If there is a slightly raised section (often brass colored) on the back of the hand hub it is called a "boss". The boss is a friction fit on the hub and by grasping it with a pair of needle nose pliers the hand may be adjusted so that when the hand is reinstalled on the shaft it will point exactly to the hour or half hour just struck. When making this adjustment grasp the hand close to the hub while turning it otherwise the hand may bend or worse snap off.
If there is no boss on the hand hub then it is an older style movement beyond a simple adjustment and it's time to take the clock for professional servicing.

Other good possibility.... Someone has removed the minute hand and replaced it backwards (front of hand facing the dial).
