Post subject: chimes problems
Grandfather clock is about 15 yrs old. These are West. chimes. The hr and the quarter hr. chimes will not chime. I've lubed where ever I could lube on the chain pulleys to help, if you apply pressure on the wt on either side, the chimes will work. I have looked to be sure the chains are not pulled up too far and caught on the board that supports the works. Not sure where to go from here. All help would be greatly appriciated. Would like to learn more about repairing clocks where would one go to get this info? Thanks, Alan

In addition to the weight pulleys there are more than 20 pivot points that require lubrication on the average chime movement. Weight wound clock movements usually require oiling every three or four years; more often for spring wound movements. However, depending on the environment that it's been in, it may also require cleaning first. Thorough cleaning of any clock movement usually requires disassembly, the use of caustic cleaning solution and is not recommended as a first time project.
There have been many books written on the subject of clock repair, including some that were written by the manufacturers of specific movements. Look under 'other' in the product section of Klockit for some books covering basic clock repair.
