Post subject: Chiming more than 12 - help please!
Hello. I'm new to this forum, so apologies if I get anything wrong!
I've recently developed an interest in clocks and have acquired a couple of chiming mantel clocks, from around 1930. One, a Garrard with Westminster chimes, keeps excellent time, but getting the chimes to work properly is defeating me. It's not just a question of adjusting the hands to tally with the time shown, as frequently the clock is chiming more than twelve. Most recently it had chimed 40 times before I switched it to 'Silent' to save my sanity! Can anyone help, please?
Happy Christmas/New Year to all

If you're going to get into fixing them then you need a good book - one such thing is 'Practical Clock Repairing' by DeCarle. this will get you started and is available secondhand as well as new.
You need an understanding of how they work to fix them.
You will need to get the mechanism out of the case and study it . usual things to look for are wear and dirt.
