I had someone ask me if paint thinner is an acceptable cleaning solution for mechanical clock movements. I believe I have heard of this, but I wanted to run it by someone more knowledgeable. Does that sound right to you? Appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks,

I would not use it - but that is my inexperienced opinion. As a side note, there are places where you can purchase "Clock Cleaning Solution" (which is made specifically for cleaning mechanical and watch movements).

Thanks! I will direct them towards a cleaning solution for clocks. I think they were just trying to save money (and use something they already had), but most of these clocks cost too much to toy around with homemade remedies if there exists an option specific for their needs.

Thanks again,
