I have a Fiesta dinnerplate that has been made into a clock. It is original, made by Homer Laughlin. The hands are fine but the clock has stopped working. I am not familiar with how to go about measuring shaft length and dial thickness. Could use suggestions. Thanks

Begin by removing the hands of the movement (there may be a cap nut or open nut that might have to be removed initially). Remove the movement from the plate. Typical movements are secured with a hex head nut over the threaded portion of the center shaft. It is this threaded portion which you will want to measure the length of. This will be the "maximum dial thickness" reference dimension, and it will tell you how long the threaded shaft portion of the movement will need to be in order to secure the movement on the front surface of the plate. From this point, select a movement with an equal or greater maximum dial thickness. You can always space the movement back with a spacer wood block if the need should be. Here are a couple of links for better clarification:

Note: Some movements have push on hands, and there may not be a cap or open nut to remove before removing the hands. In other instances, movements may not be secured by a hex nut (and may be secured to the back of the plate via double stick tape - for example).
