Hi all I am new here. I would like to discribe a problem that I have with my Grandfather clock. It runs for about 20mins than stops. While it is running thie time and chimes work fine. It looks like the Pendulum swings than just slows down and stops after 20mins. It is a Howard Miller clock about 15 years old.Any help with this problem would be great

I would first check the suspension spring to see if it might be broken. The suspension spring looks like two small, thin, metal plates that are attached to each other with two thin metal strips. You will usually find the suspension spring attached to the rear pendulum post (on the movement). In turn, the pendulum leader (which the pendulum hangs from) will be attached to the bottom portion of the suspension spring (just underneath where the spring attaches to the pendulum post on the rear of the movement). If either of the thin, metal bands of the spring are broken, the pendulum will not continue to swing.

Other things to check for if the suspension spring is not broken (listed in order):

1.) Make certain the clock cabinet (and seat-board which supports the movement) are level. This problem is more common when the clock has been moved to a new location. Most new clock assemblies feature leg levelers – which can be rotated to adjust the height in each corner of the clock assembly.

2.) Beat adjustment - If the clock is out of beat, the pendulum may not continue to swing. Typically, beat adjustment involves adjustment of the crutch arm (which feeds through the pendulum leader – see above - on the rear of the movement). This crutch arm should swing equal distance from center to left - as it does from center to right. Depending on the type of movement you have, you may have an automatic beat adjustment feature - which allows you to over swing the pendulum and allow the movement to correct itself. This information may be detailed in your clock owners manual. You can also visit the Howard Miller website…

If the suggestions made by Chris do not solve your problem, check the center weight cable when the clock stops and see if it is binding on anything. Sometimes the cable winds up improperly and binds on itself or on the mounting board. Good luck!!
