I would recommend having the clock looked at by a qualified repair person. Something is defienatly not right. Granted, my knowledge is general at best, but I am stupmed as to why the movement only malfunctions at 1 and 5...

Yep me too, however I was up at 5 am this morning and it did strike 5 times in the a.m... Does it know the difference?? I would not think it would.

It's almost 1 p.m. now so I will post an update in about an hr.

Very, very odd. Keep checking back for other posts though. We have some very knowledgeable members that may be able to give you an idea of what the problem could be and how much (on average) it may cost to fix.

In answer to your question, No - most movements should not know the difference between am & pm. I'll provide an example: With movements that have an auto night silence feature, this is something that the movement is set for by the owner (in a manner of speaking). Brief explanation: This feature automatically silences the chimes only between the late evening/early morning hours. With this feature on, for example, the clock may not chime at 1 pm in the afternoon, but chime at 1 am in the morning. If the clock was advanced 12 hours (with night silence on), it would then silence the chimes at 1am and chime at 1pm. So I do believe that there is some manual user adjustment required so a typical clock movement would know the difference between AM and PM...

Thanks I had not thought about the clocks with auto silent chimes. Those obviously do run on a 24 hr sequence. I'm not sure when that feature was started in clocks this one does not have it and the one I grew up with did not have it.

However I did some trouble shooting, I manually ran the clock through several days 1/2 hr at a time. and it did not seem to be any different a.m. or p.m. Also I noticed when the clock did not chime on the hr it would make a sound like it wanted to but then did nothing. Also it is no longer chiming at all at 1 or 5.

Also I checked all the bushings from the back and only 1 has some slop that needs to be addressed.

Thanks for your help I'll keep checking back to see if anyone else has any ideas.

if you noticed slop then it needs a service - sorry but as someone who has repaired thousands over my lifetime i think i am qualified to say at least 90% of clocks of this type need cleaning, bushings and oiling and sometimes new mainsprings.
