I'm looking for a battery-operated clock movement that's virtually silent, meaning the 'tick-tock' of the seconds isn't audible.

How can I know this in advance about a given movement? Just choosing a movement at random on Klockit page, would the following be silent: http://www.klockit.com/products/dept-157__sku-10079.html .

I've listened to cheap wall clocks at stores (eg. walmart, target) and they all have an audible ticking that I'm no fan of.

EDIT: I guess I should clarify that I don't really need a second hand, so I'm not just limited to 'continuous' sweep movements. If there are movements that don't have a second hand (do they exist?) that are silent, that would be ok too.

every mechanical device will have some sort of noise. You do not need to install a second hand. This is a fairly quiet movement, you have to put your ear up to the dial to hear it.

Another option is to go with an electric clock movement, then there would be no ticking, but a hum.

Thanks for the reply. Yes "completely silent" was a bit of hyperbole. Very Happy

I just didn't want to be able to hear the ticking in a quiet room. Sounds like there's no way to know in advance which movement will be quiet, so I appreciate your recommendations.

Advertisements aside, any continuous sweep movement will be much quieter than a standard quartz movement. In a standard battery operated quartz movement, the ticking you hear is usually associated wit the step of the second hand sweep shaft. With a continuous sweep movement, the second hand no longer steps. This makes for an extremely quiet quartz movement.

Hi, we now have a clock kit available that has a virtually silent quartz movement if you are interested ? The second hand need not be attached, there will just be a 'blank' brass centre button instead ? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160461860940

camelotcdclocks - I don't believe I had advertised anything within this particular post. If I do advertise [for the company which hosts this forum], it is only as a means of offering possible solutions to forum queries. In some cases, I must direct forum patrons to other sources/companies (as Klockit may not offer a viable solution). I will say this: There is a difference between offering a plausible solution to a problem and blatant advertising, and I try my best to be careful not to blur that line inbetween.

As a side note: I mean no disrespect... But I am curious if you are licensed to use certain images on some of your memorabilia clocks. George Lucas (for example) would not take kindly to unauthorized use of his character images, titles, logos, etc. I certainly hope that you have consent to offer products which feature registered/copy written/tradmarked material.

Hi Chris, George Lucas does not hold the copyright to the Stormtrooper helmet imsge on our 'Stormtrooper' clock, as we do ! It was designed using photoshop and manufactured by ourselves, as are many of our images used on our clocks.

1)We use no 'Logo' of George Lucas
2) The word 'Stormtrooper' is not a trademark (unless it belongs to Adolf Hitler)

Permission for use has been granted to many of our images, others are in the public domain.

Regards, Steve

I'm sorry Steve. I was not referencing your 'Stormtrooper' clock. I was actually referencing a clock which featured original poster artwork from one of the latest three movies. I see that you have since removed this clock from your line. Thanks for the history lesson, and best of luck with your business moving forward.
