Post subject: Correct Chiming after Silencing Them
Hi
I wrote recently here and received some great help. I hope you can help again!
I have a Mauthe wall clock with 1/4 hour Westminster chime. Under normal circumstances, it chimes correctly. However, when I push the lever over onto the hammers to silence the chimes at night (I can't yet sleep with it chiming ), I run into problems.
In the morning, I release the lever. It immediately chimes but not the correct number.
For example, last night I silenced it at 8:55pm. This morning, I released the lever at 7:50am. It immediately chimed for 8:00am and now the quarter hour chime is also incorrect - giving the half-past chime at a quarter-past. There seems to be no logic in what it restarts chiming at once I release the lever.
Am I doing something wrong? Or . . . as I'm typing this, something else is coming to mind . . . is that not a lever to silence the chimes but a lever to secure the hammers during transit??!!
Thanks,
Mark.

If the lever is in the back of the clock it is probably there to secure the chime hammers during moving. A lever through the dial marked 'chime/silent' is the one to be used to silence the chimes.
Most (but not all) westminster chime clocks are self adjusting, meaning that they may or may not chime the correct quarter or strike the correct hour immediately after being restarted, but will eventually readjust. (usually within the first hour or so).
