Cuckoo Clock gong

I have always been interested in Black Forest Clocks. I have in the past purchased older cuckoo clocks and tinkered on them. Recently I began purchasing newer high end clocks and I noticed something interesting. The older larger cuckoos gong and a much richer sound. The newer clocks, seem to be thin and tinny. I noticed the old movements had a brass hammer for the gong with the newer movements having what looks to be crimped sheet metal. Does this sound like a possible reason? Anybody made changes to the gongs in their clocks
