As mentioned in my previous thread, I am new to clocks and to cut a long story short, I have just bought an Enfield mantle clock.

Looking at the pictures, does the movement look ok and complete. Also....and this is a novice question, What are the three holes in the front of the dial for? I assume one is for winding the clock, another for winding the chimes, whats the third one for?

Thanks for any info

Edit: Just noticed on one of the pics it says Smiths Enfield on the dial. Am I correct in thinking it is a later model? Any way to pin point a date ?

Everything looks to be in very nice condition at a glance. As far as the winding stems: I believe that the right one winds the melody chime, the center one winds for time, and the left one winds the hour strike.

Thanks for that Chris.

I have noticed that the hole on the left (hour stike) seems to be fully wound so I have wound the others a few times to see if there are any other problems. The only thing I can pick up at the moment is that on the quarter to and on the hour, the last two chimes are missing, but it does correctly chime at quarter past and half past.

Could it be that it needs a clean?

I think that a cleaning is always the initial step when working with a "used" clock movement. This would especially be true if you just purchased the clock from someone else. Who knows the last time the clock was properly maitenanced by the previous owner (or if he/she was honest if they told you). Always better to err on the side of caution. Besides, cleaning is a opportune chance to perform a good visual inspection and make certain no parts are damaged.
