I just bought a Wm. L. Gilbert chiming store clock. Being as I have never owned an antique pedulum clock I had a question about the chimes. The chimes sound great, they are really clear and strong. But just prior to the chime there is a pretty loud grinding noise. Is this normal?

grinding - NOT normal - slight whirring sound = normal. probably needs service. using it like that may be wearing a hole out.
