I want to replace the mechanical movement in a mantle clock with an electronic unit. However all of the pendulum lengths and swings are greater than the one in my mantle clock. Are the swing and length adjustable? I want the Ave Maria chime and am considering the 12234 unit. The mechanical movement has a 8" pendulum and a 3" swing. Will the 12234 unit work in this clock?

All pendulum quartz movements feature a break-away pendulum stick so that you may adjust the length of the pendulum accordingly. The swing listed is for the maximum length of the pendulum (ex: #12234 includes a 16" break-away pendulum - mounted pendulum length is 18-1/2". At full pendulum length, the swing would be about 5-1/2"). As you shorten the pendulum, the swing would decrease.

If the swing should still happen to be to great once you have adjusted the pendulum stick to required size, you can also add weight to the backside of the pendulum bob (washers, magnets, etc) to slow the swing. In most cases, this is not necessary - however it will depend on how restrictive the current clock case is.

As a side note: Adding weight to slow the pendulum swing will not effect timekeeping - as the pendulum of any quartz movement is simply for show (and does not regulate timekeeping).
