Greetings, this is my visit to the forum. I have recently obtained an old Grandfather clock. It has W12 british made gongs stamped on the rods holder. The one chime has a really flat note to it. The hammer is set one eighth of an inch away from the rod and it strikes perfectly. Is the problem the felt pad which seems softer than the others. I have checked that the holding screw is tight. Thanks. Colin

i had the same problem with/ a gong the other day.

gong sounded clangeyinstead of a nice mellow bonng.

Change the rod.

if the 'felt/leather was soft it would just sound duller.

hit the gongs with a piece of metal softly and you will soon tell if it's th gong.
