Thank you for comments.

I must be nuts, here is what I did:

My original shipstrike was 15 years old, a gift from my wife, so I am attached to it.

I sent the clock to Chelsea and asked if they would be able to "upgrade" it to a ships bell clock.

They said Yes! They will replace the movement, the face, the hands, and apply a ship's bell serial number to the back along with a "modification date".

A pretty expensive restoration/upgrade for sure, yet it will cost just more than half of what a new ship's bell would cost. I think I will be getting the best of both worlds, my original case that I have owned for years, and now the legacy movement and face of a true ship's bell.

I am excited, though poorer. There can't be too many frankenstien clocks like this around. I am not concerned about market value, as I never plan to sell it ever.

I agree with other posters that it is most interesting to look at used Ship's bell clocks available on ebay.

There was a beautiful Mariner's model there being sold by a woman whose own grandfather had owned the clock and it even was engraved with his name. How she could sell something like that is beyond me. Her poor grandfather would turn over in his grave if he knew....
