I have a franz hermie movement number 84. It also has the number 340-020. I believe it might be wound to tight. Can someone tell me how to unwind this clock. Thanks Chuck

the number 84 stands for the year it was made = 1984.

i would suggest if it doesn't tick fully wound it needs a service.

if you don't know what you are doing you can seriously damage your hands so i cannot encourage you to repair it yourself.sorry.

Clocks are seldom "wound too tight". They get dirty, not enough power gets through the dirt to keep the clock running, so it appears to be too tight. Main cause is dirty movement with dried up oil. If it has been more than 10-15 years since cleaning, cleaning would be the #1 problem, followed by worn pivots/bushings. Trying to take it apart can damage you and the movement. There is a way to "unwind" it, but you would need a "let down" tool, and even after unwinding it, the problem would still be there.
