Post subject: Glass for a bezel
I am finishing a clock project. I acquired a schoolhouse clock case and installing a hermle 341-020 45cm in it. The problem is the clockcase was made so that I will have to use a pan and bezel combination. The pan is 12 5/8 inches which is the only one that will fit the opening. The only combination pan and bezel that I found is from Timesavers. When I called them to ask what size glass dome that I needed, I was told they didn't know. Does anyone have any experience with this and know what size dome to order? I would like to order both the glass and pan/bezel at the same time.

Normally dial pan/bezel combinations are sold with the glass pre-mounted in the bezel so that problem has already been taken care of for you. Also I don't understand why the people at Timesavers wouldn't know what size glass one of their dial/bezel combos would take.
By the way most schoolhouse (drop octagon) clocks have flat glass mounted in the bezel rather than convex glass, although there may be exceptions.

I was surprised also that Timesavers couldn't help me. I have been told many times how helpful they are. The bezel and pan combination does not come with glass. The Howard Miller schoolhouse clock that I own has a convex glass that is why I was going to put that in it. I think I will order the pan and bezel and then measure myself. I was just trying to save some time. Thanks for your help.

Note that the usual rule of thumb when ordering convex dial glass for bezels is to order glass slightly smaller than the total diameter. This small amount of play inside the bezel is advised since the glass can crack when opening and closing if it is too tight.

Thanks! I will measure carefully. I would not have known that.
