Post subject: grandfather clock stopped chiming or stricking
We went on vacation for a week and I stopped the pendulum on our grandfather clock while we were away. When we returned, I started the pendulum up and all seemed fine. Then I wound the clock. It continued to keep time but the chiming feature has stopped. The two side weights for the hour and quarter hour chiming have not been dropping.
I don't know where to look for the retard bar or the trip lever that I have read about to make sure they have not been lowered. Can you help me to resume chiming?

Check to make certain the chime selection lever is not in the "silent" position (or time/silence lever). In many cases, this lever is on either the left or right side of the movement (and may sometimes extend through the front surface of the clock dial via a right angle extender attachment).

when we left for vacation the lever was on silent but once i got back and wound up the clock i moved the lever to chime and now it isn't chiming. In fact the lever has three positions and i only seem to find 2, could it possibly be jammed?

Unfortunately, this goes beyond my general experience with mechanical movements. It may be something that you would want a repair person to check into. A qualified repair person would be able to tell if something was jammed, if the clock needed a cleaning or oiling, or if anything might be worn and in need of replacement. You can also check back in this forum from time to time, as there are members (with experience far beyond my own) who may be able to offer some additional suggestions. As a final note, you can always try contacting Klockit technical support for mechanical movements (1-800-556-6474). Despite that it may not be a movement type that Klockit sells, we may be able to offer some support or suggestions to assist.
