Moving a Grandfather clock can seem intimidating, but can be an easy process providing that proper precautions are observed.

1.) Remove the weights. I recommend labeling the left and right weights (as "left" & "right" - so that they will be properly re-installed).
2.) Remove the pendulum
3.) Use rubber bands to tie weight cables/weight chains together, then tie them around the center or bottom hinge barrel of the door. This will keep them from bouncing around (and possible scratching the interior of the case).
4.) If it is a tubular chime movement, remove all tubes. If the movement has chime rods, you may wish to tape some cardboard across the rods (so they do not jingle the entire trip).
5.) Tape across the pendulum leader to hold it in place.
6.) Make certain the movement is secure on it's mount board. Do not over-tighten it, just make certain it is secured.

There should not be a problem with laying the case on its back. Just make certain you do not store the pendulum and weights inside the case during transport.
