I have a lovely inherited old grandfather clock - been in the family 3 generations. It has been going well, but I recently stopped it. Now upon restarting it , it dings every quarter hour properly, but the hours dont ding..... what have I done and how can I fix it?

Your movement may have three keywinds or three weights attached via chain. One keywind/weight will control time, another will control the chime melody, and a third will control the hour strike. If your movement has three keywinds (or weights), make certain all three are wound/raised.

Do you know when the movement was last cleaned/oiled? This would be an initial operation that you could perform to see if it would improve movement operation. General info on this can be found here:

You can also contact Klockit for further advice or explanation on the proceedure. In many cases, a simple cleaning and oiling may solve numerous movement problems. If this would not fix the issue, then you may have to have the movement looked at by a qualified repair person. Keep checking back, however, for further suggestions from other forum patrons...

Thanks Chris- definitely three large weights and all are wound properly so will investigate cleaning. and oiling. txs
