Post subject: Gustav Becker Vienna gong
Hi all,
I am new to the forum and would like to tap the wealth of knowledge out there.
I have restored a twin weight Gustav Becker Vienna. The walnut case has been fully restored and the movement cleaned. I am at the final stages of trying the movement in the case but I didn’t take any notice of the gong I removed and I have 2 to choose from. One is a fairly tight wound gong around 4" in diameter and the gong bar has a flat surface. If I used this gong the hammer would drop on the outer ring of the gong. The second is of a round type bar and fairly loose and the overall diameter is 6". The hammer would drop on this on the centre of the gong on the horizontal section which comes from the fixing block.
I hope I have described this accurately and it makes sense to someone who may have experience with Gustav Becker Vienna’s. The movement dates around 1890 -1900
Thanks

Typically, for best sound, the hammer should strike the coil gong on the center of the gong horizontal section which comes from the fixing (casting) block. The second choice (6" diameter) should be the proper gong from your clock.

Hi Chris, The 6" gong does sound better but it is a tight fit to get it to miss the mount but I am sure I will get it to fit.
Thanks
