Post subject: HAC or Junghans ????
Hi!
I am new to your forum and hope someone can clue me in.
I have a wooden clock that was apparently used as a preentation. There is a brass label added on to the front that is in german. My guess is that it says "the 25th Jubilee Commander volunteer firemen 1908 - 1933"
The striking movement has crossed arrows maker mark, W77, 183/40 over 92 (sort of like a algebra formula), bottom of case has N551 40.
I have found the cross arrows was used by HAC (hamburg american clock co.) I have also found places where HAC merged with Junghans in either 1930 or 1933. I am guessing this clock was sold in 1933. Since there is no name on the face of the clock, is it considered a HAC or a Junghans????
Any help would be appreciated.
Not certain if any of this helps, but I did find it extremely interesting. From what I have read, I would consider your clock a HAC clock (strictly opinion). I wonder if the "40" is an indication of year of manufacture (as suggested in thread #6 from the second link)?

Chris,
Thanks so much for your help.
I had already viewed the first link you provided, but the other one with post #8 was very enlightening. I guess I am not the only one who is confused. If the 40 is the date then I think the movement was not the original one. That is because of the presentation label on the front of the case, which has 1908 - 1933.
I find it very interesting dealing with older items because finding the right answers can be very challenging.
Thanks again for your help and your opinion.

the 183 is probably how many beats it does per minute.
not sure about the 40
92 is the length of the pendulum in cms

clokfxr,
Thanks a lot for your response. This clock is a mantle clock and so has no pendulum, Is there a way to tell if the movement is designed to have a pendulum, but does not have one. In other words the movement that is in the clock is the wrong one. ???????/

you should have a hook or square hole on which to put the pend if it takes one.
