Hello Forum,

I have a Seth Thomas mantel clock that needs setting and time/chime synchronizing.

Is there anyplace online I can get a copy of an instruction manual?

Or, can someone here give some instructions?

Thanks!!

Is this a battery operated movement, or a wind-up or weight driven (mechanical) movement?

It's mechanical movement; though there is no number on the face, I have no idea if it is a 7 or 8 day clock.

With mechanical movements, the number would more than likely be on the movement itself. Check the front and rear plates of the mechanical movement for any manufacturing model numbers.

To set the time, you may rotate the minute hand forward (clock-wise). If the clock is in a chiming position, you will need to stop the hands to allow the full melody to sound. This would include stopping at the quarter hours as well as the top of the hours. You can also (if applicable) move the chime lever to the "silent" position and then proceed to rotate the hand. Once the time is set, let the movement run for a couple of hours undisturbed. Check to see if it is keeping correct time after.

If the chime needs to be synchronized, in most cases a simple minute hand hub adjustment will do the trick. For hour hand adjustment, the hour hand can be mounted at the proper time as indicated by the full hour chime strike. Rotate the minute hand until you reach the top of the hour (stop at each quarter hour to allow the movement to chime). At the top of the hour, count the number of hour strikes after the full melody. If need be, remove the hour hand and re-mount so that it points to the corresponding time as heard in the number of hour strikes. Re-mount the minute hand. If the minute hand is not pointing at the "12" o'clock position, you can remove the hand and grib the mount hub on the backside of the hand with a pair of pliers. Rotate the hand (independently of the hub) to adjust the hand so that it will point at "12". Re-mount the hand and follow the above proceedure to set the time.

Is there a way to manually set-off the chimes, in other words adjust the chimes rather than adjust the time?

The chimes are about 4 1/2 hours ahead of the clock.

Not that I am aware of. But, again, you can always set the hands to the time the movement thinks it is. From that point, adjust the clock to the current time.

That did it, it's running great and all in sync. Thanks for your assistance.
