Post subject: Herschede Hall Mantel clock
My wife recently inherited a Herschede Hall Mantle Clock from her grandfather. There is a plaque on the back that says" Herschede Hall Clock Company Cincinnati, Ohio USA Panama Pacific International Exposition 1915 Grand Prize." The face of the clock has three holes for winding across the lower half of the clock. Above the "12" is a small hole. The key to the clock fits the larger holes but the other end of the key also fits the small hole above the "12." I have seen clocks that look like this one while researching on the Internet. The problem I have is some of the sites say that some of these clocks would clockwise and some wound counterclockwise. Is there any way to determine which direction to wind the clock? Is the small hole above the "12" for setting the time? Thanks for any help you can give.

the small hole is to set the speed of the clock, if it keeping time too fast or slow that is how you would adjust it.
The clock will only wind one way, so just gently turn it until it moves, usually clockwise.
