Post subject: Kieninger HTU Movement
I have purchased the plans for your Churchill Grandfather Clock and am now ready to order the entire kit and movement. In doing online research, I found a post from someone that had used the same movement as I have selected, noting a problem with the Seat Board dimensions. Here is the post:
"Kieninger HTU movement and Dial.
Slot in movement seat board -- The documentation recommends a slot width of 1". I measured the width of the cable drums being 15/16". However, the center cable drum for the time keeping is offset to the front by 5/16". That means that together the three cables "travel" 1-1/4" over 8 days and hence the slot width should be 1-1/4" to prevent the cables from touching the movement seat board."
Is this a legitimate concern? If so, should I enlarge the opening in the Seat Board to this recommended dimension, while assembling the Seat Board?
I am extremely impressed with the quality of the clock plans I received from Klockit and look forward to building the clock. Thank you very much for your advice.
The cables must not touch the board as they unwind. Whatever it takes to accomplish this, you should do it.

Basically, the slot should not be any wider than the span between the front and rear plates of the movement (as the movement plates will bridge the slot). Having a little bit of excess would allow for slight adjustment forward and aft in the case if the need should be (however, you may be able to adjust for this by moving the entire seatboard as well).

Chris,
Thanks for your reply. Has any other builder ever experienced insufficient clearance for the cables with a 1" opening in the Seat Board with this movement?

In my 10 years (+) with the company, I have not heard of this sort of problem before.
