Need help dating a clock??

Hello, I have been given a clock by my Mother who purchased it in Portugal. It is a Schmid hand painted gilt clock (flower design). It is stamped with somebodys name on the back, who i gather was awarded it. It states 1956, but I want to make sure if that is the year it was made and to find out some general information about it. It is stamped SSS inside.
I have searched the internet but there seems to be little information.
