Post subject: New clock
My new triple chime Kieninger clock has chiming that can only be described as 'rough'. It seems as though one of the hammers hits the chime rod twice, a double hit. The clock repair person told me not to worry. It is normal. I would like a second opinion (pardon the pun). It usually occurs when the clock is fully wound. Is it ok to adjust the hammer/rod spacing. And if so, what should the size of the gap be?

It is OK to bend the hammer rods. They should normally be about 1/4 inch from the chime rods. However, you may like a louder chime, thus a closser distance. None of the hammers should hit double. Adjust them so they will not double strike.

If a hammer is hitting double - then it is probably positioned too close to the corresponding chime rod it will strike. As WOW wrote, you may bend the hammer back away from the chime rod (increasing the gap between the hammer head and chime rod), and this should solve the problem.
