I am interested in any advise on getting started building clocks for a hobby. Which type would be the best to start with.

What style of clock should really be dictated by your preference more so than anything else. It will all come down to the type of clock you are interested in. While I will admit that prior woodworking experience is handy when looking to build larger assemblies (like wall or Grandfather clocks), it is not necessarily a prerequisite. As a technician for Klockit, I have talked with many first-time woodworkers who have selected a larger assembly as their initial project. I will also admit that desk or mantel style clocks tend to be easier to build (as they will require less wood parts and minimal tooling to get started). That being said, it should not necessarily dictate where you should begin. Another tip: Do not let the movement (or type of movement used in the assembly) dictate the plan selection as well. Mechanical movements, for example, are far less intimidating that they actually appear to be.

A good place to start is to find a clock style you are interested in. It should have the movement features and design style that you are interested in (or which compliment your home décor). Once you lock onto a preferred style, the next step is to order and review the plan drawings. Remember that at any time you can contact Klockit with any questions that you may have in regard to the plan. We also have technicians standing by for assistance with mechanical and quartz movements as well. From this point, you can progress through machining of the wood parts, assembly of the case, and mounting/regulation of the movement (all with the confidence of support in any aspect that you would require). If you should have any specific questions in regard to any of Klockit’s plan products (prior to purchase), please feel free to contact us.
