I recently (Oct 3rd) finished building the Churchill Grandfather clock and installed the Hermle Triple Chime model 1161-853/CM movement. The clock was working great for about three weeks, picking up about 30 seconds every other day, but working. I moved the clock about 10" re-leveled it, now it works for about 11 hours and stops. I have checked it for plumb and level again and again, any ideas, did I miss a step during installation or something?

While you should always try to ensure that the clock case is level, you should also check the seat board (which the movement is mounted on) for level. In some instances, the clock case may be level, but the movement (on the seat board) may not be. Adjust the leg levelers until the movement seat board is level.

You should also check to see if the suspension spring is broken. If you moved the clock with the pendulum mounted in place, it could be that this piece is broken. In particular, check the metal tabs that connect the two plates of the suspesion spring.

If the suspension spring is not broken, you may also want to perform another beat adjustment. It could be that moving the clock (if the pendulum was still mounted) may have put the movement out of beat. These are just some general ideas to check into.

Once the clock is working again, check to see if the movement is still gaining time. If so, adjust the pendulum bob accordingly (see the mechanical movement instructions).

Thanks, for the info, I have rechecked level and the suspension spring looks good. After releveling tonight, the clock started ticking on its own, is I may have finally got it level again, time will tell.

Thanks again, I'll keep an eye on it and recheck the beat adjustment. I take it this movement (13044) doesn't have a self adjusting beat.

The #13044 does feature automatic beat adjustment, providing you have the interior width in the case to overswing the pendulum. Another option is to perform auto-beat adjustment outside of the case (or to remove the side glass panels so that the pendulum would not have a chance to strike the glass when overswinging).

Jerry... can you post some pics of your new clock? I'd love to see it! I have a woodworking friend of mine building the "Cheyenne" for me. I would have ordered the kit but it comes in ash only. I wanted this clock made from Red Oak.

Dave,

I will try to post some pictures of it, though I'm not quite sure how to do that. I am new to the forum here, so any sugestions on how to post them is welcome.

By the way Chris, resetting the beat adjustment worked, it's been running all week an pretty much right on time. Thanks for your help.

To post a pic you first need to upload it the internet. You will need a photo webhosting site to store your pics. I use www.photobucket.com

To post the pic you uploaded to your webhost you will need to copy the "direct link" url.

When inserting the pic into your reply here you will need to click on the IMG box at the top, then insert your copied url and hit IMG again. You can test to see if you did it right by clicking on message preview at the bottom.

By the way... did you have to remove the side glass from your case in order to do the beat adjustment?

Dave

Dave,

No, I didn't remove the glass, I left the top loose so I removed the pendulum and accessed it from the top. Here is the finished clock.
