I just bought a 13001R movement along with a new pendulum. I started the clock in the morning on christmas day. The next morning at 3AM it started chiming 12 times on the hour for the next 3 hours. After that it chimed normally. Later that night it started chiming 12 again. Any thoughts on what would cause this?

the 'rack' drops down onto a snail on the hour wheel. As each hour goes, it drop further down. The only thing i can think at the moment is that the rack tail that drops onto the snail is missing the snail on these hours and dropping further on to the hour wheel pipe.

wiggle the hour hand centre shaft forward and backwards. if there is too much play then here could be the answer.

does it do the same at the same time every day?

lets test my theory - remove the pendulum and lean the clock backwards at an angle of about 30 degrees. turn the minute hand around the hours and see if it still happens.

you could also try this with a forward lean.

you must let the clock chime all the hours.

if it cures the problem one way or 'tother then the rack tail is not lined up with the snail when its dropping on upright all of the time.

you must remove the movement and reduce the free play in the hour wheel to a minimum leaving a little play otherwise it will bind and stop.
