Post subject: Question on gold?
Hello,
I'm new to the forum.
Just had a quick question. I was told that some old clocks have gold hidden inside? Was just wondering if this was true?
If so where would I look? The works?
Thanks.

gold is very soft, so about the only thing you could use it in a clock would be for plating various parts.

I have honestly never heard of this before. Keep in mind that this would not include aspects of gold leafing (more commonly referred to as Gilding). A number of clock assemblies throughout the last two centuries, have included gilding as a means to "spruce" up a clock assembly.
As a side note, current day manufacturers do offer select movements that are gold plated. I assume that they mix the gold with other metals (zinc/copper - just as jewelery manufacturers do) to promote strength and longevity. In essence, these movements would probably be made the same way as an 18K or 24K ring/neckalce/etc.
