I have a question. How do you safely quiet down a mantle clock? Several of them have night shut-off switches; regarding quieting the chime itself, I have heard of several methods, from padding the striking hammer that sounds the chime to putting all manner of items on the chime coil itself to quiet it down.

However, I don't want to recommend a 'jerry-rig' type of solution if there is a better way of doing it. What should a person do who's looking to quiet their clock?

Thanks,

If you have a mechanical movement, you can bend the hammer(s) farther away from the corresponding chime rod. The farther each hammer is gapped, the softer the chime sound will be. Be careful, however, not to bend the hammer too far away from the chime rod... If you bend it too far, you won't hear anything at all (as the hammer may not be able to strike the rod)...
