I have 2 mantle clocks with a FRANZ-HERMLE 340-020 movement. One has what I would consider the usual horizontal balance spring. The other one has a vertical balance spring where the balance wheel shaft goes through it. My question is, how do you adjust the speed on the one with the vertical spring? I looked all over and can't see anything. Rolling Eyes

thanks,
Jim

Whoa - sorry I missed this. The 340-020 should be comparable to our #13006. There should be an adjusting screw that you can rotate left or right to adjust. This screw should be near/beside the balance spring. One full turn should be equal to 60-80 seconds in a 24 hour period. There should also be "+" and "-" etching on the movement. Turn the screw in the direction of the "+" if the clock is loosing time. The opposite direction would adjust the clock if it were gaining time. Always allow 24 hours of operation time in between adjustment. This may take a couple of days to adjust...

Hope this helps.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your response. I found out that the movement I'm talking about has what is called a helical type balance spring and does not have the type of adjustment you are referring to. I found out since I posted this question that the wheel has a series of holes in it that an adjustment clip or spring or whatever it's called go into. I'm still not clear on how to adjust it however.

Thanks again,
Jim

it sounds loike one of the older balance wheel types.

the spring you refer to MIGHT swivel around to adjust the timekeeping.
be careful not to damage the haiespring (Helical) .
