If you have a key-wound clock, and you're NOT going to use the chime/strike - should you keep the springs fully wound (and the clock on silent)

or

let the chime/strike run itsself down so that the springs stay relaxed?

I have always let our two (a Howard Miller and a Sligh) sit with the springs relaxed and the selector on silent.

Is this proper?

The choice is yours to make. Although you are probably better off leaving the springs in an unwound or 'relaxed' position if you're not planning to allow the clock to chime/strike for an extended period. If you plan to return the clock to chiming/striking at a later date, be sure to apply a light coating of mainspring grease to the coils before winding them up again.
