Post subject: weight problem
this is my first post here so if this has been asked before please bear with me . i have a mech movement that came out of a barn that is somewhat rusted but the gears are free . the chains are there , but no weights , or pendulum . how do i determine how much weight is needed to drive the movement ? & the pendulum has me completely lost . or with surface rust will it be worth the effort ? i cant find any mfg name on it or i would try to contact them . thanks dale

Get a clock repair book and it should tell you the procedure of counting the teeth of the gear train and from that determine the "beat" and the length of pendulum to use and you can find out about weight required. Check your local libraries!

I would recommend that you take a look at the existing movement. There may be information stamped/etched into the back plate (information which could describe the movement model, manufacturer, and appropriate length pendulum). With all Hermle movements sold through Klockit, there is a designation on the back plate with model, manufacturer, and pendulum length. Keep in mind that other movement manufacturers may (or may not) follow suit - but it is worth checking into.
If you can, start by trying to find the manufacturer. Once you know the company which made the movement, you should be able to contact someone to be able to determine the appropriate pendulum and weight fills required. You are also welcome to call Klockit - even if you discover that your movement is not a Hermle movement (or any movement Klockit does not sell). We may have possible alternate references for replacement parts.

There is a remote possibility that the serial number might offer a clue to the manufacturer of the movement that could be recognized by clock buffs that frequent this board. Even better would be a picture of the movement and/or the dial. Sometimes the style of movement or dial is recognizable as being peculiar to one specific manufacturer. It's worth a try anyway.

Unfortunately, the Klockit website does not offer image uploading at this time. There are, however, many free sites out there where you can post images. Klockit's web developer recommended the following:
Once you have uploaded the image to a site such as the one above, you may then provide (paste) a link (URL address) within the forum so that others may view your photo. While we apologize for any inconvenience, we do want to offer some type of means for you to be able to display your photo. In this manner, I am hoping that patrons of this forum (including those at Klockit) may be able to help you identify your movement.
