Post subject: Weights for an old movement
I have an old English movement that has no weights and I'm trying to determine the correct weight to use. The only name on the front plate is Whittaker and Shreeve which I believe is the painter of the face (1815-1817). How do I size the weights?

Check to see if the movement itself has any identifying markings. Knowing the manufacturer and model number of the movement would certainly help (if this information is supplied).

If you can, try to take a photo of the movement. You can then post photos on a free site (such as flicker, etc.) and provide the link to those photos in this forum post. While my identification skills are novice at best, other members may be able to assist after seeing the movement.
A second option: You might consider taking the movement to a qualified repair person to see if they would be able to identify it (or determine the amount of weight required to run the movement).
Unfortunately, Whittaker & Shreeve only painted the clock faces (they did not manufacture movements to the best of my knowledge). Still, perhaps this information could be used to trace the actual clock maker. You may want to consult books about "Painted Dial Clocks". Perhaps more information could be dug up there.
