Winterhalder and Hofmeier were the very cream of clock makers in the Black Forest region of Germany during the late 19th Century. This stunning 8 Day grandfather clock with Fusee driven movement, pendulum driven with both Westminster chime and Bell. So the clock can strike a tune on either the nest of 8 bells or a 5 Bell Westminster chime. The clock can also be set to silent or chimes for 1/4, 1/2 and Hour.

The case is Mahogany with the subsidiary wood being Oak. The carving and detail of the Grandfather clock are simply so stunning, it really does defy belief. This is definitely an Exhibition piece as it has been viewed, examined and authenticated by leading authorities and resident experts. None have never seen anything like it before and all state that the movment and overall mechanics of this clock are exceptionally rare. No other examples of this style of clock are known to exist. Winterhalder and Hofmeier did have a stand at the 1890 Paris exposition and this could be one of the items displayed but no proof exists to support this fact. Given its incredible detail and exceptional rarity and the fact that W & H did have a stand at the expo, then it is highly likely that this Grandfather clock did adorn the floors at this expo.

There is a definite Roman theme behind this clock. The central Bronze plaque is of Athena, the Greek God of wisdom and war. The upper pediment features a hand carved cokcrell which was a bird considered sacred to Athena and was often depicted on her helmet. There are small carved faces of Zeus, father of Athena on each side of the upper section of the clock with small bronze faces of Athena again depicted on the dial. The cast Bronze cockrell symbolises punctuality and reliability but also alertness and reminding each and every one of us of the new day. The dome which adorns this piece may indeed represent a church or roman temple but we have yet to find out more information on this particular feature. Truly a fascinating piece of Black Forest German Horology and a piece of world wide importance and rarity.
