My next project is a grandfather clock.
I am particularly interested in the Brookwood.
Is it better to start with a kit, or to build the case from scratch using plans?
I would particularly like the opinion of people who have built the kits.

Since the Brookwood is not available in plan format, your only option at this time is the kit version. If you wished to build the Brookwood from a plan, you could check back with Klockit this fall (after September). We hope to offer the Brookwood as a plan by that time.
There is nothing wrong with purchasing a kit. In fact, it saves time that would otherwise be spent machining wood parts. The only drawback to the kit aspect is that you do not get to select the wood that the kit is made out of. With a plan, you have the option of wood species selection.

Post subject: Birchwood
Ok i don't know alot about clocks but i know a bit about wood and i know that birch wood is very nice and has a lovely smell to it in the first couple of years of life.
If i was to try and build a mantle clock is there a pre-set blue-print that i could follow? Also i am also intrested more in the all mechanical clocks, so is there a site that does high quality classic mechanical clog systems?
I would reccommend the Harrison Mantel Clock Plan (which uses a mechanical movement). The stock number is 49611. It will use a Hermle triple chime mechanical movement (#13007). Incidently, the Brookwood is now available as a plan (as a follow-up to our previous posts). It is stock number 49564.
