Yet another problem !!!

I replaced a #54 mainspring unit and the clock (older Seth Thomas mantle) was running fine. all of a sudden no chimes so I went to wind the new mainspring and it was turning free. A closer look and it seems the gear on this mainspring mates to a shaft that has a smaller steel gear and a larger brass gear. The maispring engages with the steel gear and this small steel gear is just spinning on the shaft ! I suppose it is supposed to be a press fit ? would it be possible to solder this gear on ? Any help would be appreciated - about ready to get rid of the whole thing !!

I had to solder the gear onto the shaft - it worked and at least this part of the mechanism seems to be good.
